It’s been, if not a long time coming, at least longer than I had originally anticipated. But yes, the finale to the Shadow Journey series, In Darkness We Break, is finally releasing on October 15th! Twenty-twenty-four, in case you need clarification, because I actually could have meant next year. That’s what it felt like, anyway.
For those of you who don’t know, the Shadow Journey series follows a group of disparate, determined, gifted teens as they pursue their destiny across a war-torn alien world. In its way, it has been a work constructed from my blood and bone. Like another set of kids, I suppose. My three sons. But these fictional kids have faced decisions and dangers I would never wish upon my own children. Ever. Still, there is a happy ending to the story surrounding the group. Or at least one that doesn’t make me want to weep for the next three months at what I’ve put my young characters through.
They’re strong, though. Resilient. Magical even–if you believe in that sort of thing. In a combination of science fiction and dark fantasy anything is possible, whether ancient science or mystical arts.
Anyway, I thought I’d share a great review I received from K.C. Finn at Readers Favorite. Although the whole thing thrilled me to no end, authors are not really supposed to quote the entire review. We are supposed to limit our quotes to twenty-five words. However, I’m hoping I’ll be forgiven for several twenty-five-word excerpts (or less, below).
All of these are from the same five-star review by K.C. Finn:
“Author Jo Allen Ash offers a startling and action-packed conclusion to an exciting series…”
“Ash’s character development is exceptional…”
“The author’s skill in building tension and suspense keeps readers on the edge of their seats throughout…”
“I would highly recommend In Darkness We Break and the series in general for fans of action-packed, accomplished sci-fi and fantasy fiction.“
Needless to say, what I have chosen above from the review chokes me up a bit. However, I have received similarly wonderful reviews for the other three books, as well (I wouldn’t want to get you started on a series where only the last book warranted such praise) and only share this one with such profound emotion because of the problems I faced while writing the final book. By the tone of this review, I managed to resolve any issues in exactly the manner I strove to accomplish. Woohoo!
